Vintage Martha Sleeper Painted Bakelite Donkey Brooch! This delightful painted Bakelite donkey brooch is attributed to Martha Sleeper, the 1930's - 40's actress who started the "gadget" craze of costume jewelry in the mid-30's. He's every bit a child of her creation - from the hand painted accents and eye, to his enameled copper ears and "C" clasp. Sleeper, who began with a hobby of hand making whimsical jewelry, turned her designs over to The New England Novelty Co. Not many have survived, but they are an important part of the history of vintage jewelry. Did we mention that he's also very cute?
MAKER This brooch is unsigned as expected, but attributed to Martha Sleeper. SIZE This brooch is 3-1/8" in length x 1-3/4" wide at the widest point. CONDITION This brooch is in Excellent Vintage Condition! There are very slight missing painted accents. The "C" clasp is in good working order.
