Offered is this charming vintage bakelite horse brooch, made circa 1930s-40s, nicely carved with a glass eye, brass metal bridle and reins, and hand-painted details. The horse's head is a butterscotch bakelite, and the red collar is also bakelite, tested and guaranteed and decorated with hand-painted tartan stripes in lime green, cornflower blue, and yellow. The bridle straps and reins are made of brass, and the brooch has an inset pin stem attachment on the back with a rollover safety clasp. It isn't signed but could possibly be a Martha Sleeper piece -- she never signed her designs, so unless you find one with its original hangtag, they can often only be identified based on certain stylistic details and the few archival records that remain. The distinct colors used for the hand-painting on this brooch have also been noted in other documented Martha Sleeper pieces.
